What is 4th Dimension?

Many people ask us 'What is 4th Dimension', and/or 'Why do you use 4D (and not FileMaker, Access or SQL Server, for example)? These are valid questions.

In answer to the first question, 4th Dimension (4D) is the premier database development environment on the Macintosh platform, and has been since 1987. Since 1996, 4D has also been available for all the Microsoft Windows operating systems, and this cross-platform capability means that all of our software will run either under Windows® or the MacOS™.

The answer to the second question, 'Why do we use 4D?' is probably a little more involved. While we do not pretend that 4th Dimension is the perfect software development environment (no software is that good!), some of the primary reasons are:

• True client-server, relational database model
• Excellent 4th generation programming language
• Very good user interface development tools
• Rapid application development tools
• Extensibility through plug-in modules such as 4D Write (word processor), 4D Calc (spreadsheet), 4D Draw (graphics package), 4D Oracle (Oracle SQL interface) and so on.
• Excellent internet/web capabilities
• Simple file structures allowing us to easily update clients software (something that Access for example is not renowned for)
