A guide to custom software development, and of Golden Micro Solutions' related policies

IntroductionOffice Worker

The information presented here is an abridged version of our Development Policy Guide. It is intended to give you an overview of some of the issues you need to be aware of when you start to contemplate the development of a customised software package for your business.

Email us if you are interested in obtaining a full copy of the guide, which also includes additional details on the way in which we operate (that is, some of our policies with respect to the issues presented here).

How to Lose $15,000!

If you're contemplating having a customised system written for your business (by us, or a third party), it is important that you take the time to review this information. You have, or are considering, investing (probably at least) several thousand dollars in this software development. As such, you should ensure you are aware of what you are investing in. Just as you would not invest your hard earned cash in a new business without reading their prospectus, so you should not jump into a software development agreement without understanding the nature of the beast.

Unless your company has previously dealt with software development issues, the chances are you are unfamiliar with the way in which our industry works. We find many (potential) clients seeking the development of customised software, who do not fully understand what is involved in such an undertaking. Without a complete understanding of the issues involved, and the way in which we (Golden Micro) operate, there are too many chances for misunderstanding and confusion occurring - this in turn hurts our relationship, and can mean the software, Golden Micro, or both, does not meet your initial expectations.

The development of a customised software application is not a step to be taken lightly. If you have decided that it is important for your business to have a specialised system written for you, then the chances are that the functionality that the software will provide your business is crucial. That is, it can be easily assumed that the software will have some considerable benefits for your business, and as such, it is important that it runs well, and that you can have confidence in the system.

Your business may well survive without your proposed customised software application. However, if you are using an application developed by Golden Micro, we wish to ensure that our business relationship is strong and healthy as possible&emdash;this in turn helps ensure the software meets your expectations and needs, and that it does benefit your business.

The information presented here discusses some of the issues with regard formal software development contracts.

Deficiencies and Bugs

With any new software development, you must be prepared for the prospect that the system (in its early stages) will have a number of bugs and/or other deficiencies.

How do you protect yourself from being left with an 'orphaned' software product? This section discusses the issue of Escrow Agreements.
